A NEW transformer has replaced ageing equipment at a Feckenham substation.

The updated equipment at the substation on Alcester Road will strengthen the electricity system in the region.

A large specialist vehicle, the same size as three canal boats, delivered the transformer on April 9, arriving at the site just after 8 pm.

The vehicle travelled at a maximum speed of 20 mph from a substation in Charlton, Bedfordshire.

National Grid said the delivery was a team effort and “the result of many months of careful planning in collaboration with haulage contractors, the local highway authorities, police and the community.

The journey, which was originally planned for last month but was delayed, experienced a further setback due to a crash on the A43 near Fewcott in the afternoon.

Edward Gomersall, project engineer for National Grid said: “I’m grateful to my team for the hard work that went into planning and executing this delivery safely whilst seeking to minimise disruption.

“We really appreciate the cooperation and patience that the community has shown us throughout this process, which has enabled us to perform this vital work.”

The vehicle had a police escort to help manage traffic and some street furniture along the route was temporarily removed to ensure the transporter convoy progressed safely.

Residents and businesses along the route were advised to avoid parking on the road.
