A MAN has been jailed after driving a stolen car whilst over the legal alcohol limit.

On March 23 West Mercia Police officers saw a stolen white Kia Picanto bearing cloned plates on the A435 in Wythall near to J3 of the M42.

The vehicle was followed at a distance while officers from West Mercia and West Midlands Police positioned themselves to deploy a stinger device.

The car then came to a stop on a slip road and was blocked in by police.

Bodycam footage from the incident shows the driver climbing onto the back seats.

Enquiries confirmed that the car was displaying cloned registration plates and had been stolen from Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire.

The driver, Jahbar Rafiq, aged 22, failed a roadside breath test and was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and drink driving.

In custody, he provided a specimen of breath over twice the legal limit.

He was later charged with drink driving and driving without a licence or insurance.

On June 9, Rafiq of Runcorn Road, Birmingham appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to four weeks in prison and also handed a 45 month driving ban.

At the same hearing, in relation to a West Midlands Police case, Rafiq pleaded guilty to theft of a pedal cycle, possession of a knife and a racially aggravated public order offence against a police officer.

He was sentenced to 24 weeks imprisonment for these offences, to run simultaneously with the four-week sentence for the driving offences.

Staffordshire Police are continuing to investigate the theft of the car.
