A THIEF has been jailed after assaulting two police officers and committing criminal damage at Kidderminster Police Station.

Michael O'Gorman, of Priors Oak, Redditch, pleaded guilty to a number of offences at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court last month.

The 41-year-old admitted stealing six blocks of cheese and a cocktail can from Aldi in Redditch on Saturday, July 15, as well as assaulting a man.

The defendant also admitted assaulting two police officers in the execution of their duty and criminal damage on the same day.

He damaged walls, carpet and recording equipment at Kidderminster Police Station.

O'Gorman was sentenced to a total custodial period of 18 weeks on Monday, July 17.

The defendant's guilty plea was taken into consideration when the sentence was imposed.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “We’re pleased with the custodial sentence handed to O’Gorman.  We take assaults against our officers incredibly seriously and hope this case shows that we won’t hesitate to prosecute.

“Our officers are dedicated to protecting the public and they don’t deserve to be treated in this way.  It simply won’t be tolerated.

“We’re committed to keeping our officers safe and fully support the #BehindTheBadge campaign led by our Police and Crime Commissioner, which calls for better protection for police officers and support for those who become victims of crime during the course of their work.”
