Alcester Gardening Club

The New Year started well for Alcester Gardening Club with a flurry of new and rejoining members turning out on a very cold night to hear the speaker Pauline Pears talk on My Desert Island Vegetables. Pauline has spent 30 years as an advisor to Garden Organic at Ryton. She is also a writer, broadcaster and magazine editor as well as a keen allotment gardener. The selection of veg for her desert island she readily admitted was a personal choice and was based on her own taste plus what is easy to grow and gives a good return for space. Her choices were either easily storable, frozen or otherwise, or were of a cut-and-come-again nature. They were:- chard or leaf beet, dried beans such as fava beans or borlotti, leeks, potatoes, pumpkins and tomatoes. She gave interesting variety recommendations and many growing tips. All In all this was a very good talk, much enjoyed by the audience.

On February 2 the club’s AGM at 7.15pm will be followed by a talk on propagation from seeds, cuttings, and division by Philip Aubury, retired Director of Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Meetings take place at the Centre, Jubilee Court, accessed via Lea Close Alcester, usually on the first Thursday of the month. Everyone is welcome and there is a charge of 2.50 for guests but this does include refreshments.
