"WE have a serious problem with Muskett's Way footbridge".

That is the honest and damning opinion of former Redditch mayor Joe Baker following yet another incident at the bridge, over the Bromsgrove to Redditch highway.

A man was left with multiple serious injuries after he fell from the bridge last week.

West Midlands Ambulance Service received the first call to reports of a man lying on the busy roadway.

A rapid response vehicle was dispatched to the scene alongside a land ambulance and Midlands Air Ambulance from Warwickshire.

The aircraft landed on a golf course next to the main road.

The bridge has seen several suicide attempts and a number of worrying calls to police in the past.

Last July Redditch man Paul Robinson jumped off the bridge and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Cllr Baker, who has campaigned for cages to be put around the bridge in the past, said unless something is done, more lives will continue to be lost.

He said: "After putting a notice of motion forward at the county council to request the bridge was made safe, the leader of the county council assured me that this would be done within three months. This was over one year ago.

"The county council has failed in its duty of care and responsibility in continually delaying its responsibility to come up with a suitable solution. How many more incidences will it take for the the county leaders and staff to realise we have a serious problem with Musket Bridge?"

He added: "My heartfelt prayers and thoughts are with the families past and present of those who are associated with the awful and sad incidents at Muskett's Way footbridge."

Worcestershire County Council reviewed safety measures on the bridge in the wake of Mr Robinson’s death, but have not confirmed whether more robust precautions had been installed.

Councillor Alan Amos, cabinet member with responsibility for highways said: “Public safety is our number one priority when it comes to all of our roads, highways, footpaths and bridges.

“We have a commitment to follow responsible reporting guidelines and for this reason will not comment further at this time.

“Further information will of course be released when the matter is next in the public domain through council.”
