In the month of August, members take the opportunity to go on an outing instead of the usual meeting in the Village Hall. This year we were delighted to discover a hidden gem right on our doorstep, Morton Hall, Holberrow Green. The present owners Mr & Mrs Oliverie bought the property in 2009 and began a major restoration of the house and gardens. A Grade II listed building the original house was built in 1780 described a “modern stylish country home”. The eight acres of gardens and park encircling the house were designed by landscape architect Charles Chesshire as a succession of distinct garden rooms. Mrs Oliverie was captivated by the House and gardens at their initial viewing and decided immediately to buy it. A keen gardener, she wanted to develop the gardens so that the garden could be accessed from any part of the house. Anxious to retain the magnificent sight of the house coming up the drive, all vehicles are parked at the rear of the house! The Head Gardner, Harry took the group on a guided tour through the garden- explaining how the garden had changed and developed over the last 10 years. The plan was to ensure “a flow” throughout the garden both with type of plant and colour scheme. The views are far reaching over the Worcestershire countryside. There is a flower meadow which is one of the finest in the county, and it too may get listed status. After a delightful and informative tour, it was time for afternoon tea, served in the beautiful conservatory. Morton Hall is part of the National Garden scheme opening twice a year; otherwise small groups can book a tour in the afternoon during the spring and summer months. A truly delightful property to visit which is on our doorstep. The WI meets the second Wednesday of each month 7.30pm at Cookhill Village Hall, providing a variety of speakers to suit all tastes together with opportunities to participate in classes and enjoy trips out to interesting venues. New members very welcome.
