ALCESTER GARDENING CLUB
In September the speaker was Julie Ritchie who gave a talk on alpines and low growing perennials. She looked at filling small spaces with these plants as well as the usual alpine gardens. Alpines and these sorts of perennials can often fill a difficult space with poor soil as long as the drainage is good and it doesn’t stand wet in the winter. Julie took us through the year starting with cyclamen coum and snowdrops and moving through small irises to saxifrages and aubretias for spring. In summer the dwarf phlox and geranium sanguineum, thymes and dianthus take centre stage. There were plants suggested for every time of year and her plant list was popular. She also brought excellent plants for sale.
On October 5th the speaker will be Brian Skeys, whose talk entitled Inspirational Gardens of the East concentrates on the gardens of Essex and East Anglia. This will cover Beth Chatto’s garden, RHS Hyde Hall and Alan Bloom’s Bressingham Garden.
