THE One Stop Shops in Batchley, Woodrow and Winyates look set to close as Redditch Council struggles to make savings.

The shops, set up to deal with inquiries, suggestions, requests and complaints about the council, were opened in February 2004.

If they are shut, just one will remain in the town hall.

Councillor Betty Passingham said: "I'm very sad about it but if we haven't got enough money then unfortunately, they'll have to close -we have to make our books balance.

"I know it will affect those who are pensioners or disabled the most but we're doing all sorts of things to try to get them help if it happens.

"It's a bit sad but I'm hoping whatever happens, we'll be able to manage."

Councillor Juliet Brunner said: "I've had so many calls from residents in not only my ward but those close by who are concerned at these possible closures.

"I'm really quite concerned about this. I don't believe the Labour group have done their homework.

"It will have a real impact on all the vulnerable people in the community. If the shops close, those residents are expected to walk from the bus station to the town hall, which is a long way."

A council spokesman said: "Because of ongoing budgetary pressures, Redditch Council needs to make savings and having considered a number of options, concluded that the One Stop Shop closures will provide savings of £180,000.

"As a result of the proposals, we are seeking to ensure that alternative methods of accessing services are enhanced, thereby minimising the disruption and inconvenience to customers."

A final decision on the shops' future will be made on Monday, September 17 at a full council meeting.
