SHOULD members of the council walk round the town in the carnival procession, or should they ride? That was the question which arose from an invitation by the Redditch Carnival Committee to councillors to appear in the procession.
Their letter of invitation, read to the Public Works Committee on Monday, stated that if any of the members wished, cars would be provided for the tour.
Councillor R Dickens said he always held the opinion that, apart from the chairman and his lady, the council was divorced from the carnival.
Councillors in the procession would be out of place he said.
Their place was with the crowds on the side of the road, from where they could support the carnival by throwing pennies on the tableaux.
"I consider that a town council parading behind the carnival queen's float would look pathetic," he said.
