POLICE are sending a stark message to people who illegally ride off-road bikes in the Matchborough area.
Officers have seized one bike which will be crushed and issued warning notices on another two.
The move follows complaints from residents about the bikes being ridden in particular on the Icknield Street Drive BMX track.
Local Policing Officer Pc Paul Downes said: "We've already seized and are intending to destroy one off road bike being ridden by a 15-year-old, who may be taken to court for having no licence and MOT.
"Many young people and their parents are genuinely unaware of the legal implications relating to these vehicles.
"There are so few places where these vehicles can be ridden legally by youngsters and with Christmas only three months or so away we are urging parents to think twice before buying one as a present for their children."
He added: "Police receive regular complaints about scrambler bikes, moto cross bikes, mini motos, mopeds, motorised scooters and quad bikes, many of which are being ridden by youngsters not old enough to have a licence or ride on the road.
"These machines are not toys and can reach considerable speeds but many of the riders do not even wear helmets, let alone other protective clothing.
"While we don't want to be killjoys, the constant drone from these bikes can seriously affect the quality of life of local residents, not to mention putting both the riders and other people in danger."
