YOUNG bookworms at Alcester Library were in for a surprise when they were told they would be making their very own wormery.
The day was part of a summer programme of events called The Big Wild Read, in which children had to read a certain number of books during the summer holidays and learn about endangered animals and ways to help the environment.
Library assistant Theresa Rouse said: "The children were so enthusiastic. We asked them to bring in a jar but we didn't tell them what it was for.
"When they found out what they were going to put in them they were thrilled."
Youngsters also had the chance to build their own birdfeeders.
