AN apprentice builder from Redditch has been named as the Midlands' Apprentice of the Year in this year's Master Builder Awards.

Gene Hudson, who works for Ferst Construction Ltd in Upper Bentley, was selected from hundred of entries, for the high standard of his workmanship and his positive attitude and dedication.

Gene will now go through to the national final alongside apprentice builders from all over the country to compete for the title of Apprentice of the Year and a £1,000 prize which will be presented by property developer and TV personality Sarah Beeny.

John Watson, director of FMB Midland region, said: "The Apprentice of the Year Award recognises talented apprentices who have worked hard to achieve high standards of skill and craftsmanship in their chosen trade.

"Promoting a positive image of an industry threatened with skills shortages encourages young people to consider a career in construction, and safeguards the future of the industry. Gene Hudson is an outstanding example to young people entering the industry, and we wish him the best of luck in the national final."

The national winner will be announced at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on November 8.
