THE State Of Things is the debut album from Jon "Reverend" McClure and his Makers.

With one part Arctic Monkeys, a generous portion of Depeche Mode and a pinch of Hard-Fi, the album has northern funk written all over it.

On the surface the band don't sound like others around at the moment but if you listen carefully they fall into the same traps as everybody else.

Wry and observational lyrics about life on council estates, single mothers and failed relationships go hand in hand with indie guitars and pounding bass lines.

However, without the bass the album wouldn't be as good as it is and this is especially true in tracks Miss Brown and Armchair Detective.

Other stand out songs include 18-30, What The Milkman Saw and first single of the album, Heavyweight Champion Of The World.

Overall for an album that has been hyped so much it simply fails to deliver and just doesn't stand out.

There is nothing wrong with The State Of Things but it may be worth the Reverend considering a new sermon.
