THE grandmother of a six-day-old baby from Alcester who needed heart surgery has shaved her head to raise money for the charity which helped her grandson.

Parents Jeni and Christian Goodhand have had to deal with a huge range of emotions since Oscar was born in July 2006, most of all fear when they were told he had a congenital heart defect.

"All new parents understand how exciting it is to have that small, pink, warm, snuggly bundle suddenly enter their lives," said Jeni.

"Unfortunately for some of those parents the excitement is short lived and it is replaced by a gut-wrenching fear. Everything seemed so bleak and unfair."

Oscar was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Arteries, meaning his arteries were the wrong way round and he was unable to receive any oxygen.

Following a six-hour operation, the newborn was finally allowed home nearly a month later and given the all-clear at the time.

During the Goodhand's ordeal, the charity Heartlink provided them with much needed support to cope with what was happening to their son and the family made it their mission to raise funds for the charity.

A year to the day that Oscar had his surgery, Jeni's mum Lynne, 50, vowed to shave her hair down to a number one all over if she could raise £200.

"Mum's had many different hairstyles over the years but has never gone for the full on crew," said Jeni.

"Amusingly, the clippers jammed half way but after a bit of tampering we were back on target and within five minutes mum was looking as bald as her grandson."

A massive £2,211 was raised by all those who took part on the day and the family hope to carry on fundraising to thank Heartlink for the help it has given them.
