RESIDENTS are being invited to reveal their poetic sides during a competition being held as part of a Redditch group's celebration of black history.

Veronica Allen, chair of Caribbean Roots Connection, said residents will have a great opportunity to unleash their creative writing talent and everyone is welcome to take part. The theme for the competition is based around black history and culture.

All poems can be submitted on October 20, when the group will be holding its Black History Month event at the Liberal Club, in Ipsley Street, Southcrest, from noon-8pm.

All poems must be entirely the work of the author. All entrants must agree to all publicity including photographs. Entries must also include the name, address and age of the author and will be displayed on the day.

Gospel singing, poetry, singing, dancing, drumming workshops, speakers, Caribbean food and displays will be just some of the attractions on offer at the Liberal club during the Black History event.

Birmingham finest Roots and culture artist/teacher Makka B will be the main speaker.

Veronica said: "This is a very significant year in history as it's 200 years since the abolition of the Slave Trade Act. We want to encourage young people to celebrate and reflect on local and international black people's achievements, in addition to learning more about their history."

The competition is split into the following age categories: five-10, 11-16 and 17 and over. For more details, call 07952 275352 or 07929 044729 or email caribbeanrc@hotmail.co.uk.
