IF Jim Quinn or Bob and Jo Mansell ever feel a bit tired on their walking challenge, they just think of the person who has inspired them to give them the motivation to march on.
The trio are trudging out 10,000 steps a say – five miles – throughout Lent to raise money for water projects in some of the poorest parts of the world.
Jim from Webheath, and Bob and Jo, from Studley, were inspired by the story of Abdella, a young Ethiopian who walks 10 HOURS every day over rugged terrain to collect water for his family.
The trio are members of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Redditch and are taking part in the Walk for Water appeal organised by Catholic aid agency CAFOD.
Lent began in mid February and ends at the start of April, and the good news is that half way through their challenge they have all gone over their original targets.
Bob and Jo have so far raised £705 after setting a target of £700, while Jim has raised £270 against a target of £200.
All three have built in a water connection to their daily walks. Bob and Jo are walking from their home to the River Arrow and back, while Jim is undertaking various routes ranging from the Headless Cross water tower to the Swan’s Brook ford near Webheath.
Bob and Jo said: “When we read about Abdella walking for 10 hours each day to collect water for his family, we realised how fortunate we are to have water on tap. It's difficult to imagine being so short of water when we regularly have so much rain.”
Jim Quinn said: “using routes which involve walking to or alongside water enable me to reflect on the gross inequality of global access to water as well as raising funds to help address that inequality.”
