HERE's a look back to May 2004 when Manchester United paid tribute to a late football star from Redditch at an FA Cup final.

Jimmy Davis was viewed as a rising star with plenty of talent - but tragedy struck in August 2003 when he was killed in a car crash at the age of 21.

He had an extensive football career in his lifetime, playing for Manchester United and even the England national team.

He had a glittering professional career ahead and was preparing to spend the season on loan to Watford from Manchester United.

The funeral of the former Arrow Vale High School pupil was held at Redditch Crematorium and most of the Man United team, including the Neville brothers, Nicky Butt, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Paul Scholes and captain Roy Keane, attended.

On this day (Saturday, May 22) in 2004, Jimmy's former team mates paid a heartfelt tribute to him at an FA Cup final.

THE proud mother of a rising Redditch football star who was killed in a car crash in August has spoken about the touching tribute her son’s club paid to him at the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Jimmy Davis, 21, had played for Manchester United since he was 14 and was due to start a season on loan to Watford when he died.

On Saturday, Jimmy’s former team-mates donned shirts bearing the name “Davis” and his squad number, 36, as they lifted the Cup following a 3-0 victory over Millwall.

Jimmy’s mum, Jenny Burton, said she was unaware the players were planning to pay such a lovely tribute to her son.

She said: “I knew Manchester United were in the final but I can’t watch football anymore.

‘‘I used to watch it all the time but now I don’t because it’s too painful.

“It was my daughter’s boyfriend who had seen the players as they went to receive the Cup and she phoned me to tell me to watch.

“I switched on the TV and saw what was happening and it was just really moving. It was a great tribute to Jimmy – he would have loved it.”

Mrs Burton said she intended to get in touch with the club to thank them.

“Jimmy trained with the club every day so everyone knew him well.

‘Jimmy always made me so proud. Even though he’s not here now, he still makes us all so proud,” added Mrs Burton.
