THE Abbey Stadium in Redditch is closed until further notice due to fire detection issues.

The fired detection system within the stadium has malfunctioned, leading bosses to make the decision to close with immediate effect.

Rubicon Leisure managing director Simon Ingyon said: “The Abbey Stadium will close with immediate effect until further notice.

“This is due to a major problem with our fire detection system which, although has been routinely maintained, has malfunctioned.

"After careful consideration and after assessing the associated risks involved we have decided to take this decision to act responsibly and prioritise the safety of our customers and staff.

“Rubicon Leisure is working behind the scenes to arrange for a new fire detection system to be installed as quickly as possible.

"Once this is in place we can re-open. We will endeavour to keep our customers informed of developments and apologise to our members, users, clubs and organisations who use our facility.
