WORK is underway to create a state-of-the-art outdoor fitness area at Redditch’s Abbey Stadium.
The new fitness area, called Area 7, will boast the latest equipment including a rig for pull-ups, an Olympic lifting platform, Concept 2 bikes, a sled and battle ropes.
Although the area, which is estimated to cost £250,000, is partly covered, the sides will be open to give the sensation of training outside.
Abbey Stadium’s senior customer advisor Jo Dudley is hoping the new area will attract new people.
She said: “As well as increasing the opportunities available to our existing members and customers we hope this new area will attract a new group of users who love to train outside or perhaps are still nervous about doing exercise inside because of Covid.
“The Area 7 equipment provides seven functional movements and is a new way to train and of course our dedicated and trained staff will be on hand to offer professional advice, so users get the most out of their workout.”
Area 7 is set to open on an initially-limited programme from the start of December, before getting fully into gear from January when there will also be an open day.
Redditch Borough Council leader Cllr Matt Dormer said: “To bounce back after being closed for the best part of a year is testament to the hard work of Rubicon staff who throughout the pandemic got creative to reach out to people where possible and still provide activities and events to support residents’ mental and physical health.

“But it’s great to be back face to face and while of course we still need to be cautious, it is great to see the Abbey Stadium expanding its health and fitness offer and the rest of Rubicon’s assets also moving from strength to strength.”
