REDDITCH has become the first place in the UK to operate the newest Bird e-scooters as the town’s trial is extended.

Bird has announced a further extension has been granted for a trial of its shared electric scooters in Redditch until November this year.

To coincide with the extension the company has deployed a brand-new fleet of scooters called the Bird Three vehicles – the most advanced e-scooter to date.

Strategic planning and conservation manager for Redditch Borough Council, Michael Dunphy, said: “The trial has gone well so far and we have managed to iron out some of the initial issues.

“We’ve already expanded the trial area, so the remainder of the trial going into the summer months will provide more opportunities for scooter usage.

“We continue to work closely with Bird as a collaborative partner, to make the scheme accessible, and help even more of our community get where they need to go without the need for a car.”

Local NHS workers can receive two free 30 minute rides per day.

Bird’s operational zone includes Alexandra Hospital and workers can sign up by emailing a copy of their NHS identification card along with their name and phone number to together@bird.co.

James Padden, general manager UK & Ireland, Bird said: “We are also excited for residents to be the first in the UK to try our expertly-designed Bird Three vehicles, providing an even smoother and safer rider experience.

“Finally, in a week that saw free car parking for NHS workers scrapped in England, we want to remind local NHS workers that they ride with Bird for free.

“We want to make micromobility and car-free journeys even more accessible for the town’s everyday heroes who may be feeling the current cost of living squeeze.”

Bird’s electric scooters were first introduced in Redditch in 2020.
