RACHEL Maclean has resigned from the government.
The Redditch MP has announced her formal resignation from Boris Johnson’s government.
Ms Maclean was appointed as Minister for Safeguarding last year but said recent events demonstrate that while the Prime Minister remains in office the “woefully low rate of prosecutions for sexual offences” will not improve.
In her letter of resignation to the Prime Minister, she said: “I have defended you to the hill to my constituents and to the public.
"You have been an incredible leader for our party through some very difficult times, but you must now resign for the good of the country and our party.
"I ask you now to step aside so that we can get on with the important task of serving the country and providing it with the leadership it so badly needs."
With deep regret I am resigning as Minister for Safeguarding. It remains the greatest honour of my life to represent Redditch in Parliament and I will continue to support the policies which I was re-elected to deliver from the backbenches. pic.twitter.com/rSaWHEBdBf

The mass resignation of ministers, along with a string of parliamentary aides, came after Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid quit their Cabinet posts on Tuesday evening.
More than 31 MPs have now resigned from government in 24 hours.
