A medical director has been presented with an honorary doctorate.

West Midlands Ambulance Service’s Dr Alison Walker received an Honorary Doctorate of Science by Coventry University.

The award was in recognition of Dr Walker's contributions to the advancement of pre-hospital care both in the West Midlands and throughout the UK.

Dr Walker has dedicated over 30 years of her life to the NHS and since 2010 has worked at the service as both its interim and permanent medical director and honorary medical advisor.

Further demonstrating her commitment to the medical field, Dr Walker also chairs the Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Liaison Committee (JRCALC), which is responsible for setting operational guidelines for clinical ambulance staff across the UK.

Previous accolades for Dr Walker include a gold medal from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, which she was awarded last year for her work in developing connections between hospitals and ambulance services during the global pandemic.

Dr Walker is also involved with medical research, carrying out her own investigations while also supporting others in advancing medical care.

She said: "I am really delighted to have received the Honorary Doctorate as it's lovely to have that level of recognition from an academic body.

"I was supposed to be coming down to Coventry a year ago but couldn’t make it as I had a brain haemorrhage and got to see the NHS from a different perspective, as a patient.

"Having spent three months in hospital and been further supported during my recovery, I really appreciate everything that staff within the NHS do to support patients every single day.

"The care I received means that I am not only able to return to work but also to have attended yesterday’s ceremony which was a fantastic event."
