The family of a sporting stalwart who was well-loved in the community have been "overwhelmed" by the kind messages of support following his death.

Paul Booton played cricket for Worcestershire, Kidderminster and Bewdley and was the youngest player in the Birmingham League when it sat below professional-level cricket.

He passed away suddenly on Sunday, May 12 aged 84.

His son, Andrew Booton, has thanked the community for their cards and kind messages and has asked people to join the family at his dad's funeral next week.

Paul's funeral will take place at 2pm on Thursday, June 6 at St Mary's and All Saints Church in Kidderminster.

There will also be a reception following the service.

Andrew Booton said: "We’ve been overwhelmed by the cards and kind messages, which all say the same thing – he was a gentle man and a brilliant sportsman.

"That’s a lovely legacy to leave. His many friends will be most welcome to attend his funeral and wake on June 6."

As well as playing cricket, Mr Booton also played rugby for Kidderminster Carolians, table tennis in the Kidderminster League and most sports for Brintons where he was a production manager for more than 30 years.

His family said he was destined for a career as a professional cricketer but "decided that proper work would pay more" so he became a technical dyer at Brintons.

His son, Andrew Booton, said: "He was a well-liked character locally. Going into town with him was frustrating because he'd stop every few yards to say hello to someone he had played sport with or a work colleague.

"He seemed to know everyone. If there was a ball to be kicked, hit or thrown, he'd played it."

As well as his sporting triumphs, Mr Booton was transport manager for TP Activity Toys in Stourport.

He was also an active supporter of Kidderminster Cricket Club and Kidderminster Harriers and a committee member and bass singer for the Kidderminster Male Choir in his retirement.

Everyone is welcome to attend the funeral next week but it is family flowers only.
