Pupils from a middle school in Redditch have lifted the trophy in the final of the Utilita Kids Cup at Wembley.

The team from Walkwood CE Middle School had the incredible opportunity of playing in front of 20,000 people before the Championship play-off final between Leeds United and Southampton.

The school, who were representing West Bromwich Albion, came head-to-head with the team from St Patrick's Catholic Primary School, who represented Southampton.

Pupil Charlie Howes said: "When we walked into Wembley, you just got a sense of how big it is and how much of an honour it is to play here."

After a goalless start to the game, the second half saw all the action when West Brom skipper Jacob Cox stepped up from the Baggies to break the deadlock.

The number nine headed in the opening goal of the game on the 10-minute mark to give the team the lead.

Victory was all but sealed in the 13th minute when West Brom doubled their advantage late in the game thanks to George Clinton to make it 2-0.

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Charlie Howes, said: "It felt so good to play on Wembley, I just kept telling myself what a great opportunity it was.

"I might never get this moment again, so I'm just really happy to win."

After the game, midfielder George Clinton added: "It was absolutely brilliant to play at Wembley, it was such a great experience. I was a bit nervous coming in, but once I was out there, it was just another game.

"It was good to score one, even if it was a tap-in. I'll never forget today."

The competition is a national tournament for junior footballers which offers children the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play a match at Wembley Stadium.

The school was lucky enough to also get a special visit from ex-footballer Clinton Morrison ahead of their game at the home of football who offered them some words of encouragement.

Headteacher Caroline Lowe said: "'We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 football team. Their determination, sporting spirit and skill set have been outstanding throughout the tournament.

"Undoubtedly, this experience has created memories that they will treasure for a lifetime. A huge well done to our amazing footballers."

"The Wembley experience provided by the EFL and Utilita is beyond words and is something that the team will remember for a lifetime."
