A cat has been left in a "life-threatening" condition after being attacked by two dogs in Rubery.

Owner Sarah Hewson said Mog was sitting on the driveway on Saturday (July 20) when he was suddenly pounced on and dragged along the ground by what she believes to be a "banned breed" dog.

A second dog then also got hold of Mog and he was dragged back to the top of the drive before he managed to escape.

Ms Hewson said: "Mog came to us as a stray cat about eight years ago. We took him to a vet and although he had a microchip, the vet couldn't trace the owner so myself and other neighbours now look after him.

"I fed him on Saturday morning and then he went out to sit on the driveway. I thought nothing of it until he didn't come for his food in the afternoon.

"I thought I had heard screaming earlier in the day, so I checked the CCTV to see if it was Mog and that's when I saw the attack. It was horrible to watch. It is truly heartbreaking."

Mog disappeared for two days after the attack before making his way back into the garden on Monday (July 22) when Ms Hewson rushed him to Townsend Vets in Bromsgrove.

He sustained severe damage to his liver and had to be put on strong medication.

Ms Hewson said: "The vet had no idea how he'd managed to survive until Monday without any help. They told me he should be dead. He has severe damage to his liver and he now needs special medication.

"He has puncture wounds all over his body and severe bruising on his stomach. He also sustained a secondary respiratory infection and had to have a procedure to insert a tube into his stomach for food.

"The vet tried to contact his owner again but the details still didn't work so I am now in the process of becoming his legal owner. The procedures and treatment he has had so far have already cost more than £2,000."

Ms Hewson has reported the incident to West Mercia Police and after talking to the RSPCA she believes the dogs might be a banned breed.

She has also thanked neighbours and dog walkers in the area for their support as well as Townsend Vets.

The 47-year-old said: "I am working with an RSPCA officer at Frankley and he believes one of the dogs might be an XL Bully breed but we don't know if it is registered. We haven't been able to confirm the breed of the second dog as they need more clarification.

"The dog walkers in our area have been incredible as well as Townsend Vets who have been amazing with Mog. It is heartbreaking to see him in this condition.

"I completely agree that not all dogs are the same and the majority of dog owners are very responsible, but I just want to make people aware of what has happened.

"I have a young grandson and I hate to think what could have happened if he had been there instead of Mog."

Ms Hewson is also asking for anyone with information to come forward and report it to West Mercia Police.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police: "We received a call around 10.15pm on Sunday (July 21) with a report of an owner's cat being attacked by a dog on Callowbrook Lane in Rubery.

"An investigation is now ongoing. We are unable to confirm the breed."
