A REDDITCH Borough councillor has been suspended from the Labour Party after being charged with intentional strangulation.
Saheed Khan, commonly known as Sid, has pleaded not guilty to the charge and is set to appear at Worcester Crown Court on November 26 for trial.
The 50-year-old was re-elected in the local elections in May this year as a Labour councillor for the North ward, and was recently the portfolio holder for environmental services on the borough council.
The Redditch Borough Council website shows that Khan now sits as an independent councillor.
In September 2022, Khan was elected to the Labour National Policy Forum to represent the West Midlands, representing the Redditch Labour group on a national level.
A Labour Party spokesperson has confirmed that the councillor has been "administratively suspended from the Labour Party" following the charge.
A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "Saheed Khan has been charged with intentional strangulation.
"He appeared at Kidderminster Magistrates’ Court on 27 June 2024 for the first hearing.
"The charge relates to an incident which happened on the 25th June 2024".
The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that Khan pleaded not guilty to one count of intentional strangulation when he later appeared at Worcester Crown Court on August 6 for a plea hearing.
He is currently on bail and will now appear at Worcester Crown Court for trial on November 26.
Khan declined to comment.
