A MOTORWAY has been brought to a standstill after a horse was able to get free. 

Police were forced to close the M5 today (September 21) after a horse got loose on the carriageway. 

The motorway was closed between Junction 7 and Junction 6 for over an hour from around midday whilst emergency crews attempted to regain control of the animal. 

The incident closed all northbound lanes and created tailbacks of over 90 minutes.

In three updates on social media, a National Highways spokesperson said: "The M5 in Worcestershire is closed northbound between J7 and J6 near Worcester due to a horse on the carriageway. 

"Traffic officers and West Mercia Police are working at the scene."

In a following post, the spokesperson said: "The M5 in Worcestershire is closed northbound between J7 and J6 near Worcester due to a horse on the carriageway. 

"A vet has attended and treated the horse that has been safely transferred to another vehicle."

In a final post, the spokesperson said: The horse that was loose on the M5 in Worcestershire has been safely secured. 

"The northbound carriageway has been reopened between J7 and J6 near Worcester. 

"There are residual delays of 90 minutes on the approach."
