A primary school in Worcestershire is set to remain partially closed tomorrow due to flooding.

Bewdley Primary School was forced to close today (Monday, September 23) after heavy rain had flooded the electric cupboard making it unsafe for children to be on the premises.

In an update issued this afternoon, the school thanked parents and carers for their understanding and said the school would remain partially closed tomorrow (Tuesday, September 24).

The school will be open for all children in nursery, reception, Year 1 and Year 2, but it will remain closed for children in Years 3 to 6.

Staff hope the school will full reopen on Wednesday (September 25).

In a statement, headteacher Amanda Bradley said: "Firstly, I would like to begin by thanking everyone in the school community for their patience and understanding this morning.

"At 7am, the carpet in the Year 5 locker area and around the KS2 toilets was a little soggy. However, in a very short space of time, with the increased heavy rainfall, the water began pouring through the ceiling in the girls’ toilets.

"On the other side of the toilet wall is a cupboard which houses the school’s main electrical unit and fuse box. As the heavy rain continued, it then began to pour through the ceiling, directly into the cupboard which began to fill with water.

"As I’m sure you can appreciate, particularly given the weather forecast for the day, it was at this point that we made the decision to close to children for the remainder of the school day.

"The National Grid has now been into school and has completely sealed off the unit. They have reassured us that it is safe to have the power on in school. The leaks have now been fixed and, unless we have another 48 hours of biblical rainfall, should be absolutely watertight moving forward.

"We are now assessing the extent of the damage and how we can get the school up and running at full capacity again, as quickly as possible."

The school said that due to the water damage in the KS2 toilets, they will not be useable tomorrow which makes the ratio of toilets to pupils too low to fully reopen.

Ms Bradley added: "We are very sorry to announce that the school will be closed for children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. The day will run as usual for children in Years 2 and below, including any pre-booked breakfast and after-school clubs.

"Any children in Years 3-6 who have already booked in will have clubs and school lunches refunded in due course. Children in Years 3 to 6 will receive an email from their teacher later this afternoon with some links on it to aid home learning.

"Again, please rest assured that this decision has not been taken lightly and it is very much our intention for the school to be open to all pupils again on Wednesday. Thank you again for your understanding."
