A WORCESTER woman was 'dumbfounded' after a loss of water supply at Worcestershire Royal Hospital saw her appointment cancelled.

Tanya Bishop said her ear nose and throat appointment was cancelled on Monday, September 23, after she had arrived at Worcestershire Royal as a 'critical incident' was declared.

It was later revealed to her the main Worcestershire Royal Hospital building suffered disruption to its mains water supply at around lunchtime, leaving no running water.

A baffled Mrs Bishop said the situation was like something you'd hear during a world war rather than a genuine incident in the 21st century.

Mrs Bishop said 30 to 40 people were waiting for their appointments and had all been told they were cancelled due to no running water.

She added she was also told to visit A&E to go to the toilet as those in the main building were unavailable.

Mrs Bishop added one woman told her she paid £30 to get a taxi to the hospital from Stourport only for it to be cancelled.

Mrs Bishop said: "It was a very strange situation, it was something you would expect to see during the World Wars but not in the 21st century.

"I was shocked and dumbfounded at the situation, I couldn't believe it.

"I had been waiting for this appointment for a while and phoned at 10am that morning to see where I was with it, and I was able to get an appointment.

"When I later asked why I wasn't informed that my appointment could be cancelled beforehand I was told there wasn't enough time."

Stephen Collman, managing director of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The main Worcestershire Royal Hospital building suffered disruption to its mains water supply at around lunchtime on Monday, leaving no running water.

“Several immediate actions were put in place to protect the safety of patients – this included an additional water tanker brought to the hospital, and bottled water distributed to priority clinical areas. The situation was resolved by 6pm.

“We would like to apologise to those patients and visitors whose visit was affected – where appointments did have to be cancelled, these are being rescheduled at the earliest opportunity.

“We are continuing to closely monitor the situation to ensure there is no further disruption.”
