THE RETURN of Worcester Warriors appears 'tantalisingly closer' after a week of major updates, according to fans of the rugby club.

Plans have been revealed for a major revamp of Sixways Stadium, the former home of Worcester Warriors, by the club's new owners Junction 6 Limited.

Now the chair of Worcester Warriors Supporters Trust, Marcus Mulcahy, said he hopes the positivity continues to radiate as fans dream for elite-level rugby to return to Sixways.

Under plans submitted to Wychavon District Council, the North and South stand would be demolished and rebuilt, while the mooted new 120-bed hotel would be three storeys high.

If given the green light, it is expected construction will take between two and five years.

A planning application also includes sports rehabilitation accommodation, a multi-storey car park, a golf driving range a solar farm and a sports pitch.

Bosses at Sixways have also revealed they are currently working on relaunching the Worcester Warriors website, complete with a brand-new stadium logo.

Mr Mulcahy said fans have waited long enough for this news which he has hailed as perhaps the most significantly positive week for the prospect of a Warriors return since the supporters' trust was formed.

He added: "We very much hope this positivity continues and radiates outwards not just to our local rugby community but to our city and county.

"Things have been moving apace at Sixways Stadium over the last few days, or at least the publicly available information has been increasing rapidly.

"It transpires that extremely hard work has been ongoing behind closed doors, with a minimum of fuss, for many months.

"The supporters' trust has been following developments with much interest, safe in the knowledge that our new ownership and the Sixways team have, all along, stuck rigidly to their goal of returning elite-level rugby to Worcester.

"This goal now appears tantalisingly closer."

The plans for Sixways are, according to bosses, to remove any chance of failure in the future for Warriors as the club looks to re-join elite-level rugby.

A statement released by Sixways also said it wants to 'avoid past mistakes' as it attempts to resurrect the club.
