A NURSE from Bromsgrove has spoken of her anxiety-inducing experience of being bunkered down in a Florida hotel room for 24 hours as Hurricane Milton hit.
Melissa Rutter, who went on Holiday with her partner Daniel King and his parents, had their return flight cancelled as the storm swept in last week.
They were staying at the Hilton Hotel in Orlando after previously visiting Sarasota on their two-week holiday. Their holiday had started just after the deadly Hurricane Helene passed.
Ms Rutter, who was on her first trip to the States, described the "scary" experience of witnessing the storm.
The 30-year-old said: "On the Tuesday (October 8) it was quite a lovely day - even Wednesday morning.
"And then the winds started to pick up as the day went on.
"On Tuesday we bought food and bottles of water and from Wednesday afternoon we were in the hotel room for about 24 hours.
"There was a power cut for a couple of hours but the hotel did have generators. We were quite fortunate to have power.
"The winds were howling through the hotel room.
"The anxiety was definitely quite high. I was quite scared.
"We felt safe where we were. We were reassured that it was hurricane proof".
The storm meant that their return flight was cancelled.
"We were due to fly back on the Wednesday (October 9), Ms Rutter said.
"It was cancelled because of the storm coming in.
"We got to get on a flight Friday evening and we landed back Saturday morning".
"It was a definite relief to get back.
"My dog's been diagnosed with a brain tumour so I was desperate to get back to see him".
Despite the storm, Ms Rutter said she enjoyed the holiday, visiting some of the top tourist attractions in Florida.
She added: "Overall we had an amazing time.
"It was an amazing holiday, I’ll definitely go back. Maybe not around a hurricane though".
