This week, I proudly voted for the Employment Rights Bill at its second reading – a landmark piece of legislation that will make a real difference for workers in Redditch and the villages and across the country. This Bill forms part of the government’s wider New Deal for Working People, a plan to ensure that work pays and that everyone enjoys the dignity and security they deserve in the workplace.

The Employment Rights Bill introduces vital reforms, including the establishment of “day one rights” for all workers. No one should have to wait two years to be protected from unfair dismissal, and this Bill guarantees that protection from the first day of employment. It also tackles exploitative practices such as “fire and rehire,” which have too often been used to unfairly treat workers.

Many families in Redditch rely on low-paid or insecure work, and this legislation will help raise the standard of living for thousands. By introducing fair pay agreements in sectors like adult social care and increasing protections for those on zero-hour contracts, we are taking real steps to address the inequalities that have been neglected for too long. Workers who previously had no voice will now have the legal backing to challenge mistreatment and secure better working conditions.

I am committed to working closely with local employers and stakeholders to ensure these reforms are implemented effectively, with the interests of working people at the heart of our economic recovery. I will also continue to push for further improvements, such as stronger statutory sick pay, as the Bill moves through Parliament.

This is a crucial first step in building a fairer and more just society, and I am determined to make sure Redditch and the villages are at the forefront of these positive changes.
