IT'S A FEELING many of us have probably experienced when looking out a closed stretch of motorway; the desire to get out of the car and walk along tarmac normally far too dangerous to even consider stepping on.

Some people found the temptation too much to resist while stuck in standstill traffic along the M5 - and they brought a football with them for a kick about.

A lorry carrying potentially hazardous chemicals caught fire and shut the motorway between junction 22 and junction 23 from 9.30am on Friday (October 25).

After waiting for three hours and with seemingly no end in sight, people started spilling over onto the empty section of carriageway.

Kelly Jakeman, from Stourbridge, was stuck in the traffic all day and saw crowds of people exiting their cars.

The 29-year-old said: "There were loads of different groups playing football, it was actually quite nice to see.

"There were a few mini games going across two miles of road."

The M5 northbound opened to traffic at 2pm, while only one lane open to traffic travelling southbound until 2am on Saturday (October 26) so emergency resurfacing could take place.
