OVER the weekend, our community gathered in Redditch for Remembrance Sunday, to pay tribute to those who have served our country. It was incredibly moving to see so many residents come together to honour the sacrifices made to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. I’d like to thank the Redditch Royal British Legion for organising another meaningful event and to all those who supported the Poppy Appeal this year. Together, we demonstrate not just in words, but in action, our commitment to those who served.

Supporting veterans is a responsibility that extends well beyond Remembrance Day. Recently, I met with Al Carns, the new Minister for Veterans and People, to address critical issues impacting veterans in Redditch and the Villages. These discussions focused on housing, mental health, and the challenges faced by veterans as they transition back to civilian life. Ensuring our veterans feel valued and supported is a priority I am committed to championing in Parliament.

A recent positive step has been the government’s approval of HM Armed Forces Veteran Cards as valid voter ID, allowing around two million veterans to participate more fully in the democratic process. This is an important recognition of their service. However, more remains to be done. I have called for a parliamentary debate to explore how we can further strengthen support for veterans, active service members, and their families. Many military families, especially those with children who need special educational support, face unique challenges due to frequent relocations, and we must address these needs effectively.

The government’s recent pledge of £3.5 million to reduce veteran homelessness marks another significant step forward. This funding will help provide targeted mental health support, employment resources, and aid in independent living—supporting veterans in creating stable lives upon their return.

Last week, I had the privilege of planting a remembrance cross in the Speaker’s Garden at the House of Commons on behalf of Redditch and the Villages. I also joined the Redditch Remembrance Parade and Service, and Astwood Bank Royal British Legion's Armistice Day event. These acts of remembrance reflect our enduring respect for those who served.

If you or a veteran you know needs assistance, please reach out to me at chris.bloore.mp@parliament.uk. Together, let’s ensure no veteran in Redditch and the Villages feels left behind.
