Public transport is the backbone of our community. For workers, students, and older residents across Redditch and the Villages, bus services provide a vital link to employment, education, healthcare, and social activities. Yet, under the previous Conservative government, our local services suffered a devastating decline, with Worcestershire experiencing a 42% reduction in bus miles over a decade. This left too many communities isolated and disconnected.
The Labour government is determined to reverse this decline. Our ambitious £1 billion bus service reform represents the most significant investment in public transport in 40 years. Worcestershire is set to receive £9.4 million, ensuring that previously underserved rural areas finally get the attention they deserve.
I know there has been concern about the national bus fare cap increasing from £2 to £3 by January 2026, however we know that the previous conservative government had made no plans to continue the cap. The fare cap will remain far below the market rates seen under the Conservatives, who allowed some fares to soar as high as £13. This £3 cap ensures affordability while providing the financial stability operators need to maintain and enhance services.
Beyond fares, Labour’s reforms will put power back into the hands of local communities. Through expanded franchising powers, councils like Worcestershire’s can determine routes, timetables, and service standards. This means local priorities—like ensuring our villages are well connected—will take precedence over decisions made in distant boardrooms.
For too long, Redditch and the Villages have been underserved. The Conservatives cut thousands of routes nationally, but Labour’s approach is about rebuilding and expanding our network. Reliable, affordable buses are not just about transportation; they are a gateway to opportunity, sustainability, and social cohesion.
Together, we can ensure that our bus network serves the needs of all our communities. Let’s work to secure a public transport system that connects, empowers, and supports everyone in Redditch and the Villages.
