TWO of Worcester’s rising stars have just returned from a masterclass money could not buy.

Becky Rose and Autumn Lily - both of whom have become familiar faces on the city’s music scene - travelled to London last week for a music masterclass at the world famous Abbey Road and Maida Vale studios with some of the biggest names in the business.

Rose, aged 19, and 18-year-old Lily were selected from those who had performed on BBC Hereford and Worcester’s Introducing sessions for the one-day event which was, essentially, a crash course in how to make it to the top.

Famous musicians and producers like Mark Ronson, Tinchy Stryder and the Kaiser Chiefs all popped into the studios to talk to the group - which itself was made up with the best up-and-coming acts in the country.

For anyone, it would be an awe-inspiring day - and it was no different for the two Worcester girls.

“It would be hard to select a favourite bit as it was amazing to be in places such as Abbey Road and Maida Vale studios,” said Lily. “But I really enjoyed the chat with the two guys out of the Kaiser Chefs, they gave the obvious tips like believe in your material and gig as much as possible, but also gave some quirky tips.

“The Jo Wiley In Session with the head of Columbia Records and other 'major' people was also great, as you got to hear what they are looking for in an artist, how to get hold of them or catch their attention.”

University of Worcester student Rose said: “My favourite part of the day would have to be the songwriting class with Zane Lowe, Gary Barlow and Mark Ronson, because they helped me realise that you have to be yourself when writing music, as opposed to forcing something conventional out for the sake of making a hit.”

Both girls seem to have come away with more belief in their own music and its possibilities than ever before.

“The best piece of advice I gained on the day was to believe in my own material and if I'm confident with it, then I will succeed,” said Lily.

“There's no point in forcing something out that conforms to current hits on the radio because by the time you reach it, the industry will have moved on to another trend,” said Rose. “You have to be yourself entirely, because in the end, regardless of the style of music you create, real talent and true determination always shows.”
