WORK is finally set to start next week on the new Alcester Primary Care Centre project.
Originally, work was due to begin on the centre in October of 2010, but the project has encountered delays, due of everything from changes in the national guidance from the Department of Health regarding land transactions, to a nationally imposed election purdah, bats in the roof of the old hospital building, and the discovery of asbestos on the site.
To solve the issues regarding land transactions, the GPs who plan to run the new primary care centre, are now purchasing the land, after transaction was agreed at NHS Warwickshire’s board meeting last week.
Stephen Jones, chief executive of NHS Warwickshire, said: "The delays in the project so far have been frustrating for all those involved, including the local community. We are delighted that we have found a solution to the challenge we faced and now the project can move forward with full steam ahead."
Dr Richard Lambert, one of the GPs involved in the project, added: "It's great that the developers will be starting work on site next week. We're looking forward to the opening of the new primary care centre next Autumn and being able to provide the local community with a wide range of services close to home."
The new centre intends to incorporate the Priory Road Health Centre and the Arrow Lodge Medical Practice, along with facilities for physiotherapy, a pharmacy and out-patient services. Community health services will also operate out of the centre.
