A REDDITCH student, who attended Alcester Grammar School, has won a bursary from OCR, the Oxford, Cambridge, and RSA examination board, to study at Cambridge University.
Tim King, who has just completed his A Levels at Alcester Grammar, was awarded just over £3,000 by the board, the first installment in a lengthy bursary which will see him having his individual fees paid every year for the length of his undergraduate studies.
The bursary is awarded to students in the West Midlands area, to help them make the most of their opportunities at Cambridge.
Mark Dawe, chief executive of OCR, said: “These students have demonstrated exemplary qualities to achieve what they have done, not just academically, but in their extracurricular activities and their willingness to go the extra mile. Securing a place at the University of Cambridge represents a fantastic opportunity to further their achievements and these bursaries will enable them to do so without some of the financial constraints.”
Mr King is going to be reading mathematics at Homerton College, when term starts this year.
He said: “It was an honour to be chosen for this bursary, and I'm very grateful. I can now partake in the Cambridge University experience; in particular I can join Homerton's Jazz Orchestra and not have to look for part-time jobs in every corner.
“Most pleasingly I can now spend some time promoting the National Cipher Challenge in various schools and assisting their pupils in taking part, which is one of the things that got me into maths in the first place.”
Mary Preston, head of year 13 at Alcester Grammar, added: “Timothy's achievement is fantastic. He's a very able mathematician and musician and the bursary will help him to fulfil all his potential.”
