AN emergency motorcycle courier service has recently responded to its 10,000th call.

Severn Freewheelers, which has members from Redditch, has been providing a free out-of-hours courier service to Worcestershire Acute Hospitals across the county since 2007.

Edward Kendrick, from the group, described the service as convenient and cost effective.

“We operate 7pm to 7am on weekdays and 24 hours at weekends and bank holidays,” he said.

“In short, a professional team delivering a professional service, free to the NHS at the point of use.”

He added: “We are fortunate to have the support of several large organisations and charitable groups.

“However, we are always looking for more volunteers to either ride, dispatch or help with fundraising.”

Harry Turner, chairman of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the Alex Hospital, thanked the group for its vital support and hard work.

“They are an important link in ensuring the safe, fast transfer of urgently needed items out-of-hours to support patients across the county,” he said.
