FOR some years now I have been researching and recording the history of entertainment and the personalities and events involved as far back as the Public Hall, later the Gaumont Cinema and then various night clubs (now being demolished) and beyond.
In the early 40s and 50s there was a man named Monte Banks (no relation to his namesake, the famous producer who married Gracie fields).
He was a semi professional magician and I have recollections of him being much in demand at local events.
If I recall correctly he may have lived in the Mappleborough Green area.
I believe he worked at a factory in Studley Road.
The rumour was, that in later years he went to live in Thailand where he was the owner of a night club.
It was also said that he was murdered.
I would very much like, if anyone of your readers have any recollections of his background, family, or details of his activities, if they would get in touch with the Advertiser by emailing ben.
russell@midlands.co.uk and the information can then be forwarded to me.
