RUGBY UNION - After last week's encouraging performance, Alcester were reminded of the work they still have to do as they lost their pre-season friendly at Redditch 39-22.
Still missing players, Alcester chose to merge their 1sts and 2nds for a match of four quarters and started brightest with 17-year-old fly half Jamie Randall putting them in front with a well struck penalty.
The Kingfishers hit back and led 29-3 at the halfway stage after some woeful defending had allowed the home side to run in four tries, improved by three conversions and a penalty.
To add to their frustrations, Alcester spurned their best try scoring chance when they won a penalty five yards from the line only to be driven off the ball allowing Redditch to clear.
Stung by some harsh words Alcester played their best rugby at the start of the third quarter with skipper Scott Carmichael profiting from some hesitation in the home defence to score under the posts. Mike Conway kicked the conversion.
Soon after prop Nev Teasdale forced his way over from the base of a ruck to further reduce the arrears.
The home side restored their advantage in the final quarter with two more scores before Alcester's Ollie Chester intercepted a pass inside his own half to race 60 yards and score under the posts, Conway again converting.
Alcester start their Midlands Five West (S) campaign at promoted Dudley Wasps on Saturday.
