RUGBY UNION - WOODRUSH made it back-to-back wins when they followed up last week's Vase success with a 31-14 defeat of Midlands Four West (S) visitors Shipston.

And they could not have made a better start to their opening league clash, cruising into a 24-0 lead inside the opening 15 minutes.

Andrew McGrann, Andy Poole and Steve Smart bagged early tries for the home side with Smart also adding three conversions and a penalty against a stunned Shipston side.

The visitors rallied and, after keeping Woodrush out for the remainder of the half, crossed for their opening try early in the second period as their hosts regrouped having lost the influential John Board with concussion.

Further Shipston pressure followed but excellent defence stopped them from adding to their tally. Instead it was the home side who ran in a fourth, Smart breaking away to score under the posts, which he then converted.

The Warwickshire side added a second try late on but Woodrush coach Matt Elwell was delighted.

"We defended brilliantly, especially at the start of the second half," he explained.

Woodrush head to Old Coventrians on Saturday (ko 3pm) in the league.
