REDDITCH United secured a fairytale last-minute 2-1 victory over Stamford on Matt Clarke's short-notice return to the club.

Alex Cameron's 96th-minute header clinched three points on Saturday (November 16) as Clarke took charge following former manager and England goalkeeper Tim Flowers' shock sudden departure "late" on Friday (November 15).

Flowers has since been announced as the new Alvechurch manager.

The match started brightly at the Valley Stadium for the Reds with Johnny Johnston's effort deflected into the side-netting.

However, the visitors quickly took the lead when Jack Duffy capitalised on a missed back-pass to score into an open net.

The game turned scrappy with Redditch absorbing pressure and goalkeeper Callum Smith making several crucial saves.

Johnston came close to levelling the score but rolled his effort just wide of the post which left the Reds entering half-time trailing by a goal.

Smith continued his heroics in the second half, denying Duffy a second goal with a quick reaction save.

Redditch's persistence paid off in the 59th minute when Johnston's cutback was cleared to George Atwal who fired the ball into the bottom right corner to equalise.

The Reds continued to pile on the pressure with Johnston and Atwal both coming close.

The tide started to turn when Stamford were reduced to 10 men when George Hobbins received a second yellow card for pulling back Johnston on the break.

Substitute Cameron's last-gasp header sealed the dramatic victory for Redditch.

On Clarke's return, chairman David Faulkner said: "Football is a fast-moving game, and when changes happen, it’s crucial to act quickly.

"With Tim Flowers stepping down, we knew we needed to provide clarity for both our players and supporters.

"Matt Clarke is someone who knows the club well and has a proven track record of success.

"We’re excited to see him return and lead the team forward."

Clarke said: "This club means a lot to me and I feel like there’s unfinished business here.

"I’m looking forward to working with the players and staff to build on what we’ve achieved in the past and push this club to even greater heights."

Clarke will be back in the dugout tonight (Monday, November 18) when they face Studley in the Birmingham Senior Cup at The Beehive at 7.45pm.
